Scholars program offers free tuition & opportunities

Central Carolina Technical College Scholars program offers free tuition and unlimited opportunities to 2015 grads of Clarendon, Kershaw, and Lee counties

SUMTER, S.C. – This fall semester, nearly 300 local high school graduates are enrolled in the Central Carolina Scholars program. The program was initially presented in March of 2011; with the main objective to “collaborate with the school districts to create a better prepared workforce and make higher education more accessible,” according to CCTC President Dr. Tim Hardee.

Eligible members of the Class of 2015 from Clarendon, Kershaw, and Lee counties receive free tuition for the duration of any one of CCTC’s programs of study up to two years (six consecutive semesters). Students who are eligible; attended their target high school as a freshman in 2011, graduated on time in 2015, passed required college-level testing, graduated with a minimum GPA of 2.0, and completed a 2015-2016 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

Significant benefits of being a Central Carolina Scholar include free tuition, small class sizes, excellent job placement rates in careers that pay well, transferable courses, and free student support resources to help ensure student success.

A special orientation for the Central Carolina Scholars was held in June at the CCTC Main Campus in Sumter. It included campus tours, free computer technology placement testing, registration, financial aid assistance, and academic advisement.

“Central Carolina Scholars provides increased awareness of the importance of attending college immediately after high school; translating into more students becoming work ready at an earlier age. This leads to an improved workforce benefiting our local community,” says Vicki Singleton, CCTC Secondary Programs Director.
