Tornado Shelter Procedures
The proper procedures for responding to this type of emergency can be found in the following publications: Emergency Procedures Guide, College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, College Environmental Safety and Health Manual, and each online course syllabus. For your convenience, these procedures are listed below:
Tornado Warning:
A broken siren (five or more blasts of the alarm system) signals the need to find an appropriate shelter. You should move quickly and quietly to the nearest sheltering location in halls and classrooms, away from glass doors and windows, on interior walls, and to the lowest floor of the building. Sit on the floor and cover your face with your arm or a cloth to protect against flying debris.
Instructors and students are to help anyone with a disability or needing assistance to the nearest sheltering area. Instructors and supervisors should account for their constituents. Instructors are to move their classes to the predetermined sheltering area as quickly as possible and maintain students together by classes until further information is given.
Three short blasts of the emergency communication system indicate the “all clear” to return to normal operations.
