CCTC celebrates nearly 570 new graduates

SUMTER, S.C. – Central Carolina Technical College held two commencement ceremonies Friday, May 5 at the Sumter County Civic Center to accommodate nearly 570 graduates.

The 10:00 a.m. ceremony was for students graduating from Business and Public Service programs. The 3:00 p.m. ceremony was for students graduating from General Education, Health Sciences and Industrial and Engineering Technology programs. Previous E.C. “Red” Kneece Teaching Excellence Award winners delivered the keynote address at both ceremonies.  English Department Chair Timothy Midgette spoke at the 10:00 a.m. ceremony and Engineering Design Technology Program Manager David Tuders spoke at the 3:00 p.m. ceremony.

Massage Therapy Academic Program Manager Brent Jackson was honored during the morning commencement ceremony as this year’s recipient of the E.C. “Red” Kneece Teaching Excellence Award. Jackson is consistently spoken of as one of the best instructors on campus by students and fellow faculty and regularly volunteers and participates in college-related and community service activities.

Debra Branham was honored with an Outstanding Alumni Award during the morning service. Branham graduated from CCTC with an Associate Degree in Paralegal in 2013. Branham is a Kershaw County Probate Judge and was elected in November of 2014. She is a member of the South Carolina Probate Judges Association, the National Association of Probate Judges as well as a member of the Paralegal Advisory Committee for CCTC.

Terry Lee Newman Jr., the Fossil Hydro Environmental Compliance Manager at South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, was also honored with an Outstanding Alumni Award during the afternoon service. Newman graduated from Sumter Area Technical College, later to become Central Carolina Technical College with an Associate Degree in Environmental Engineering Technology in 1992. He furthered his education and earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management from Columbia Southern University in 2006.
